“The Goddess was truly watching over all of you,” one of the Healers said to Rilic as he finished sealing the wound with some sort of invisible sealant. It looked like he stared at it hard and the wound closed. Simona couldn’t figure out how it worked and decided they must use some sort of technology that would look like magic back on Earth. The Healer applied a bandage and signaled he was done as he added. “Both knife wounds missed a major artery by a hair’s width. Rest for a cycle and you should be good as new.”

The trip back to the mothership hadn’t gone as smoothly as the one over there. They’d been followed by some of the delegation, with what could only be described as a suicide attempt to crash into them.

“Jalek, that was some excellent maneuvering you did on the way back over here,” Malm said. “We watched from the command bridge as the other jump tried to follow you. That side maneuver was executed perfectly. I see your training is serving you well. You looked excellent out there, warrior.”

Simona noticed he hadn’t called him “young” warrior as had previously been the norm. She could sense Jalek caught that too and it looked like he sat up a little taller. She knew she didn’t like it when Phoebe and Tordin had called her young and empathized with him on that.

She was proud of him as well and couldn’t hold back her comment. “Jalek managed to make an eleven-minute trip better than any rollercoaster ride.”

Tordin spoke up, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news Rilic, but it appears the only confirmed survivors are the captain, his second, and Cordin. The rest of the council members and ship crew are dead.”

“I sensed as much when I couldn’t contact them on the vo-links when it first started. Do you know if we’ll be able to get back over and regain the ship?” Rilic asked, hope evident.

“I’ve already sent a small team headed by one of our top scouts, Devar. They are going in cloaked and on the modified sliders.”

“He’s a great scout. I heard how well he did during the Rogolas incident,” Rilic said, appearing to be pleased with Tordin’s choice.

Simona looked up from watching the Healer tend to the cuts on her hands to see Jalek return to that grumpy mood he’d had at the beginning of the day. She fought the heat that rose within her at seeing him hurting. Couldn’t these people see something was going on with him? This Rogolas incident must have done a number on him and she wanted to get to the bottom of it.

They now shared a secret.

When he’d gotten her back into the jump and ready to take off from the council ship, he froze and couldn’t move once he sat in the pilot’s seat. She thought he was being his normal overly-cautious self, like earlier in the morning, but this was different. Rilic was in the back in pain and she couldn’t get him to move.
